Svengi / Gattino Vintage Colourblock Racing Sweatshirt — Czechoslovakia, 1980s
Svengi / Gattino Vintage Colourblock Racing Sweatshirt — Made in Czechoslovakia, 1980s
This is not a piece you find every day. A Finnish-distributed Svengi label, manufactured under the Gattino brand by the state-run Chebana textile factory in Cheb, Czechoslovakia — a city on the very edge of the German border, now part of the Czech Republic. Made before the country’s dissolution, this sweatshirt is a genuine artefact of late Soviet-era Eastern European manufacturing at its most characterful.
The colourblock racing aesthetic — bold graphic panels, oversized relaxed cut — is pure late 80s street culture. The fabric tells the full story: a thick, substantial blend of cotton (Ba = Baumwolle) and viscose (VSs = Viskóza střiž), noticeably heavier and more structured than anything produced today. It holds its shape perfectly.
A collector’s piece in every sense — the kind of garment that documents a specific moment in European fashion and manufacturing history that no longer exists.
