Finnwear “Kipi Club” Track Jacket — Late 70s — Suomen Trikoo — Size 40
Finnwear “Kipi Club” Track Jacket — Late 70s — Suomen Trikoo — Size 40
ThePlugOfVintage presents a late 1970s Finnwear “Kipi Club” track jacket by Suomen Trikoo — a rare and exceptional piece of Finnish textile heritage in outstanding vintage condition. Bright red body with black ribs and details. The kind of Finnish vintage that simply does not surface anymore.
Suomen Trikoo — The Nordic Textile Giant
Suomen Trikoo Oy was founded in Tampere in 1903 and grew over decades into the largest knitwear factory in the Nordic countries. At its peak in the 1950s, over 2,400 workers were employed at the factories, and the company was responsible for nearly half of all knitwear production in Finland. The historic red-brick factory buildings on Pyynikki and Onkiniemi in Tampere remain an important part of Finland’s industrial heritage.
From the 1950s onwards, the company invested heavily in exports — to the other Nordic countries, Western Europe, and the Soviet Union — creating well-known brands including Finnwear and the underwear brand Black Horse. The quality standard was so high that Marimekko had its famous Tasaraita knitwear produced at Suomen Trikoo’s factories in the 1960s and 70s. Finlayson acquired the company in 1983, and original Finnish production gradually wound down with globalisation.
Kipi Club — Finland’s Casualwear Sub-Brand
Kipi Club was a dedicated leisurewear and sportswear sub-brand operating under the Finnwear umbrella in the late 1970s and early 1980s. While Suomen Trikoo and Finnwear were known to the wider public for everyday basics and underwear, Kipi Club was created specifically for fashionable casual and athleisure wear — track jackets, sweatshirts, and coordinated sportswear sets.
The line was defined by the bold design language of the late 70s/early 80s: colourblocking, contrast stripes, and structured cuts — precisely the details that international retro and streetwear buyers seek today. Because Kipi Club was a more limited, specific fashion line produced only during a defined window, its pieces are significantly rarer than standard Finnwear products — making it a more compelling “Euro-vintage” find for serious collectors.
This jacket is a direct product of that golden era — made in Finland, under the Finnwear/Kipi Club brand, with the full weight of Suomen Trikoo’s legendary manufacturing quality behind it.
